Invisalign FAQs

Invisalign Frequently Asked Questions

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign® is a modern, advanced way to straighten teeth without the need for metal wires and brackets. The treatment uses a series of custom made clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten the teeth. There are over a million satisfied Invisalign users worldwide.

Who is suitable for Invisalign?

Adults, adolescents and teenagers may be suitable for the treatment. It is effective for patients with a range of orthodontic problems including buck, crooked, overlapped teeth, gaps between teeth, problems with bite such as overbite and under bite, problems which may have occurred naturally or for those who have previously worn braces and their teeth have moved again. The treatment can also be combined with other dental treatments.

Are Invisalign aligners really invisible?

Invisalign aligners are made from a very thin high quality medical grade clear plastic, so they are nearly invisible. Even close up, most people do not notice you are straightening your teeth – unless you decide to tell them!

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses 3D computer imaging technology to give you a visual idea of the complete treatment plan from the initial position of your teeth to the final desired position before treatment even commences. If you are happy with the computer simulation, a series of custom-made aligners are produced. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is usually worn for approximately 22 hours each day for two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved. The computer simulation can also be used to estimate how long your treatment will take, which on average can be between 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during the treatment is between 18-30 varying from case to case.

What is the duration of Invisalign treatment?

A full treatment typically takes between 9-15 months varying from case to case.

Do I need teeth removed?

If your teeth are mildly crowded, then generally tooth removal is not required when you have Invisalign treatment which means much less discomfort, reduced costs, quicker treatment and a fuller smile.

Are Invisalign aligners comfortable?

A temporary feeling of pressure for a few days is experienced by most patients when a new set of aligners is worn at the beginning of each stage of the treatment. This is an indication that the treatment is working effectively, slowly moving your teeth to the desired position.

Will wearing Invisalign aligners affect my speech?

Temporary changes in speech, such as a slight lisp, may be experienced by some patients when wearing the aligners, as with many orthodontic treatments. The lisp or minor speech impediments should disappear once your tongue gets used to having aligners in your mouth.

What foods can I eat?

You can eat whatever you like unlike with traditional wires & brackets, as you remove your Invisalign aligners to eat and drink. A diet that is high in sugars and involves frequent snacks, however, should generally be avoided for good oral health.

It is advisable to brush your teeth after each meal and before re-inserting your Invisalign aligners onto the teeth to maintain good oral hygiene.

Will my teeth move after Invisalign treatment is finished?

After the completion of Invisalign treatment most patients wear clear plastic retainers at night only to prevent the teeth from moving again. Although many types of orthodontic removable and fixed retainers are available, we have found the retainer of choice is made by Invisalign. This is a great solution as your ability to brush and floss your teeth properly is not affected. They are comfortable to wear and protect the enamel of your teeth from very common night time grinding. Removable retainers need only be worn while sleeping.

I have previously had braces but my teeth have moved. Is Invisalign an option?

Yes, it is an option. We have successfully treated many patients that have been in this situation using Invisalign treatment rather than wearing braces again.
