Teeth Extractions in Birmingham
Oral (mouth) surgery and maxillofacial (jaws and face) surgery.
There are many types of oral surgery, however, the ones which are performed in general dental practices are extractions such as of badly decayed teeth, impacted wisdom teeth and teeth that have fractured below gum level which could have been caused by trauma.
Placing DENTAL IMPLANTS is also a form of oral surgery.
Extractions are performed so that the patient is no longer in pain or discomfort from the tooth which is causing the problem.
Impacted wisdom teeth often get infected easily due to the direction in which they are coming through (erupting) the gum, making it difficult to keep the gum area around the tooth clean as the teeth are far back in the mouth and food can easily become trapped in between the teeth, infecting the gum. Having these teeth removed if they keep causing a problem is beneficial to the patient as it will prevent further infection, pain and discomfort, along with reducing the unpleasant taste and smell in the patient’s mouth.
Many wisdom teeth extractions can be done in general practice using a local anaesthetic. Dr Dinesh Vegad is an experienced dentist, having extracted many difficult wisdom teeth requiring oral surgery.
At St Pauls Square Dental Practice, we take a CT scan prior to extracting teeth so that we can see in detail where the root lies in relation to the nerve, ensuring that we have all the correct clinical information, giving the patient an informed diagnosis, putting the patient’s mind at ease regarding the whole procedure from the start.
Advantages of Extractions in Dental Practice
Having a wisdom tooth removed in general practice rather than in hospital is a much quicker experience, avoiding lengthy waiting lists which can involve waiting for up to 12-18 months.
The recovery time from having a surgical extraction in a general practice under local anaesthetic rather than in a hospital environment under general anaesthetic is shorter, enabling you to return to work the same day or the next day, if you prefer.
No more pain or symptoms from the teeth which have been causing discomfort.
After the Procedure
Swelling and bruising can result after the extraction, which is common and subsides within a few days, with the correct aftercare.
If this after care isn’t followed properly, the socket formed from the extraction can become infected, requiring treatment by antibiotics.
It is recommended to avoid exercise, for example running or going to the gym, for 24 – 48 hours afterwards as the extraction sites need to heal requiring the formation of a clot and vigorous exercise can disturb this clot forming.
DENTAL IMPLANTS are a long term way of replacing lost teeth. Implants are becoming increasingly popular in replacing teeth that have been lost through trauma, tooth decay or gum disease. The procedure is the costliest option of replacing teeth, however is the best option and with sufficient care, implants can last for several years, supporting crowns and bridges. There can be slight swelling and bruising after implant placement surgery is performed, however this subsides after a few days, with proper after care.
There is a very small percentage of implants that do not integrate into the bone, these are usually due to poor after care.
If you are smoker it is advised not to smoke as implant failure is higher in smokers, and many dentists / implantologists will not place implants on smokers.
Advantages of Dental Implants:
- Dental implants give a natural look with a tooth/teeth that is/are fixed, and will feel and look like your own tooth.
- You will have the confidence to smile as you will not be conscious of a gap in your teeth, or if you wear dentures, worried that your dentures may show or fall down while eating.
- The health of your mouth will be improved as your mouth will be easier to keep clean and less of a food trap from wearing dentures.
- You will be able to enjoy your food again and eat whatever you like with confidence.
