What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through tooth decay or injury. If the pulp of your tooth becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system, which could eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.
What is Root Canal Treatment?
At St Paul’s Square Dental Practice, our dentist with a special interest in Endodontics Dr Ashok Reddy (MSC Endodontics) can perform root canal treatment to stop the infection from spreading and will preserve as much of your tooth as possible. Using specific techniques and advanced equipment, you will receive a local anaesthetic and the treatment overall should feel no different to having an ordinary filling placed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Root Canal Treatment
What is root canal treatment and why is it needed?
Root canal treatment is a procedure used to remove infection from inside a tooth when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. This infection is often caused by deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. Treating the infection helps relieve pain, prevent further damage, and preserve the natural tooth structure. Depending on the severity of treatment, we may recommend placing a crown after treatment to protect the tooth from further damage.
Is root canal treatment painful?
Root canal treatment is commonly thought to be painful, but modern techniques and local anaesthetic mean the procedure is usually no more uncomfortable than having a filling. The treatment is designed to relieve pain caused by infection rather than cause it, and most patients feel significantly better once the infection is removed.
How long does a root canal procedure take?
The length of treatment depends on the tooth being treated and the severity of the infection. Front teeth may be completed in a single visit, while molars with multiple canals may require more appointments. Your dentist will explain the expected treatment time after assessing your tooth.
What happens after root canal treatment?
After the infected pulp is removed and the tooth is sealed, a temporary or permanent filling is placed. In many cases, a dental crown is recommended to protect the tooth and restore its strength. With proper care, a root canal–treated tooth can last for many years.
How can I book an appointment for root canal treatment?
If you are experiencing persistent tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity, or swelling around a tooth, arranging a dental appointment promptly is important. During your visit, the affected tooth will be carefully examined to determine whether root canal treatment is required. Early assessment helps prevent further infection and protect the natural tooth structure.
